House Invaders: The Fab Four

As temperatures drop in Michigan, people aren’t the only ones running for cover. Many have noticed an influx of bugs desperately trying to make their way indoors. They flock to the west and south sides of homes because they are the warmest. They sneak into siding, caulking, window sills or anywhere else they can squeeze in. Then they hunker in for a long winter’s nap.

What are these bugs doing? Well, they’re trying to stay alive during the colder temperatures. The four most common bugs you’ll find trying to bunk with you and your family this winter are Asian Lady Beetles, Boxelder bugs, Western Conifer Seed bugs and Cluster flies.

Multi-Colored Asian Lady Beetle

These little bugs are often mistaken for the common lady bug. They come in a variety of shades, from light brown to bright reddish-orange. Their spots can vary, too. They could have large or small spots, or no spots at all. Identify the Asian Lady Beetle by four black and white markings that resemble apple seeds right behind their head. Although harmless, they can ooze a stinky, orange liquid when squeezed too hard.

Boxelder Bug

It makes sense that Boxelder bugs like boxelder trees. But don’t be confused if you don’t have that type of tree on your property because they can fly. Boxelder bugs are dark gray or black with brilliant red borders on their wings and body. When their wings rest on their back, it forms a red V-shape.

Western Conifer Seed Bug

Cone-bearing evergreen trees provide homes for the Western Conifer Seed bug. They find the sticky sap inside the pine cones irresistible. Western Conifers resemble stink bugs or squash bugs.Discern the difference by looking closely at its hind legs for an arrow-shaped protrusion.

Cluster Fly

As their name implies, Cluster flies like to hang out in groups. When they are young, they feed on earthworms. As adults, they live freely. Cluster flies move very slowly and groggily when going into or coming out of the dormancy stage.

Many of these insects will not be affected by insect sprays or chemicals because their metabolisms have slowed into the dormancy stage. Your best defense is to check your windows and doorways. Suck them up with the vacuum and enjoy the fall from the comfort of your warm, cozy home.
